Latin 510 (Tacitus). Assignment for Week 8 (T 11/24; NO CLASS Th)
Dialogus 1-13; also read MayerŐs Introduction, pp. 1-50
Report: Jessica on landscape/topography in the Agricola
A comment on Dialogus commentaries: You should use, of course, Mayer, which you should have purchased. But Gudeman's (1898 ed. is in English) is a philological masterpiece; Gngerich's (in German) 1980 commentary is serviceable, easy to read, less thorough than Gudeman's but obviously more up-to-date. Bennett's and other commentaries in English are not on the same order as any of these.
Ponderanda
You guessed it: beginnings. What does the prologue of the Dialogus tell us...and how does it compare to the prologues of the other two minor works?
Also: what in the first 13 chapters might lead you to suspect that this is not a work by Tacitus?
